- Educating Maine students in osteopathic medicine
- Providing continuing education for physicians
- Improving the health of Maine people through education and research

Financial Support Opportunities for 2026
MOEF offers two distinct pathways for osteopathic medical students:
- Traditional MOEF Scholarships
- Maine Osteopathic Scholars Program (new in 2026)
Students may apply to one or both programs.
Traditional MOEF Scholarships (Updated for 2026)
Eligibility
- Maine residency required (except for 4th-year scholarship)
- Enrollment in an accredited and AOA-approved COM
- Minimum of three years of Maine residency prior to first application (except 4th-year applicants)
- Preference for students interested in primary care and returning to practice in Maine
2026 Scholarship Awards
1st, 2nd, or 3rd Year Student Scholarship
- Award: $2,500
- Eligibility: Maine residents enrolled in an approved COM
- Residency Requirement: Minimum three years prior to first application
- Preference: Students intending to return to Maine for primary care practice
4th Year Student Scholarship
- Award: $2,500
- Eligibility: Students matched into a primary care residency in Maine
- Residency Requirement: Not required
Expectations of Scholarship Recipients
- Maintain good academic standing
- Participate, when possible, in MOA or MOEF community activities related to osteopathic medicine
Maine Osteopathic Scholars Program (New for 2026)
Program Overview
The Maine Osteopathic Scholars Program supports medical students committed to osteopathic medicine and building careers in Maine. The program provides renewable, multi-year scholarship funding, mentorship, professional networking, and engagement with Maine’s osteopathic community.
2026 Cohort
Two first-year medical students (Class of 2030) will be selected.
Multi-Year Scholarship Support
Annual renewable awards:
- Year 1: $1,000
- Year 2: $1,500
- Year 3: $2,000
- Year 4: $2,500
Scholars must submit a brief annual update describing progress and commitment to practicing in Maine.
Longitudinal Engagement Requirements
Scholars complete yearly activities such as:
- Clinical rotations in Maine (especially rural or underserved areas)
- Participation in a mentorship program with a Maine DO
- Community health outreach or volunteer service
- Attendance at the MOA Annual June Conference
Recognition
Scholars receive the distinction of “Maine Osteopathic Scholar” and may be featured at MOA events, in newsletters, and in publications.
Eligibility
- Enrollment in an accredited COM
- Strong interest in practicing in Maine
- Good academic and professional standing
- Willingness to participate in annual engagement activities
Selection Criteria
- Commitment to primary care and future practice in Maine
- Connection to Maine
- Academic achievement and professionalism
- Leadership, service, and community engagement
- Applicants will be subject to a virtual interview in final selections

Essay Requirements
- Traditional MOEF Scholarships
- Prompt: "If you were applying for a position in a rural/underserved area of Maine, how would you communicate who you are, why you want to practice medicine in Maine, and why you, as an osteopathic physician, are the best to serve Maine patients?"
- Maine Osteopathic Scholars Program
- Personal statement describing (can be based on prompt above, please include additional “motivation to join the Scholars Program):
- Interest in osteopathic medicine
- Commitment to practicing in Maine
- Motivation for joining the Scholars Program
